Born into the practice of architecture, Gail started working for her architect father, the late Terry Hallock of Pittsfield,
Massachusetts, when she was 16 to pay for a new bike; and then she stayed on.
After graduation from RI School of Design with a BFA and Bachelor of Architecture, Gail & her father opened a branch office of Hallock Architects in Warren RI in 1983.
The office moved to the village of Wickford RI in 1987, to a beautiful example of early American architecture, built in 1788, where it is now.
Upon the retirement of Terry, Gail opened her own firm, Gail Hallock Architect Inc. and now specializes in working with families to design their new houses and additions.
Among her passions, travel is perhaps Gail's favorite. Traveling enables her to see beautiful architecture worldwide, both public and domestic, the interesting details and innovative or traditional designs of which she then shares with her clients in inspirations for the design of their own houses.
The beauty of the world around us and concern for the health of the earth has prompted Gail to study, in depth, sustainable architecture and renewable energy sources and how they can economically and aesthetically be brought into her clients' homes.
“My clients are an important part of the design process, as they often have fabulous ideas which we combine with mine as we work together to create a house that they love and are proud of and will live happily in. It is very important to me that my clients feel that the end result of our collaboration is that they have the house they dreamed of building,” says Gail.
“My favorite clients are varied, from the young couple with young children who need to put a small addition like a new family room on their house, to the couple who are retiring to their beach house, which is to be rebuilt into an efficient and beautiful year round home, and everyone in between.”
“My clients generally have a sense of good design, and have already been working on their dream house by looking at other houses they like, maybe even marking favorite rooms in magazines and design books.”
“They are concerned for the environment and want to incorporate sustainable design and may be willing to spend a little more initially to be ahead of the curve on green design, without breaking the budget.”
Their house or addition will be a reflection of their individual tastes and style, and will be able to work with the way they want to use their house, so that the function of each room flows from the way they want to live,” she says.
Gail's work has received several awards and has appeared in several publications, including Rhode Island Monthly and Better Homes & Gardens
